Girls’ water polo falls to Campolindo in season opener

The Palo Alto High School girls’ varsity water polo team lost to Campolindo High School, 11-6, in its season opener at Stanford Aquatic Center this Friday.

The Campolindo Lady Cougars got off to a quick start, scoring three goals in the first four minutes of play. Driver Kimi Klein (’11) put in the first two goals of the game and finished as the high scorer with six of the Lady Cougars’ 11 goals.

The Lady Vikes fought back, scoring four in the first half and two in the second. Driver Haley Conner (’11) contributed four of Paly’s six goals, while driver Skylar Dorosin (’12) and two-meter defender Anna Glaves (’11) added one each. However, it was not enough, as the Lady Cougars kept up tight defense and a quick pace.

Despite the loss, the Lady Vikes have high hopes for the season and expect a great year.

“The Campo girls played hard defense and they were very grabby,” Dorosin said. “We were ready for aggressive but not that grabby. We also missed some critical shots but I think this is a good start point to the season.”

Paly head coach Cory Olcott agrees with Dorosin about the promise of the team.

“I saw a lot of good stuff,” Olcott said. “We made mistakes, but the first game of the year is often like this where you have stuff to work on.”

Not only did the team display potential, but it also showed intensity, another positive for the Lady Vikes.

“For our first game, we came out really intense, and this was a really good team,” two-meter Katie Maser (’11) said. “I am excited for the season. We are about to [do very well].”

The Lady Vikes play on Tuesday in the Saint Francis invitational tournament.
