The Palo Alto High School boys’ tennis team lost to the Los Altos Wildcats, 2-5 today at home.

With a quick win by number one singles player Nicky Hu (‘12) the Vikings were off to a solid start with a 1-0 lead. However, after injuring his back in today’s match, Blake Smith (‘14) had to retire his match at the number three singles spot giving Los Altos a win.

With losses from number singles player Austin Leung (‘14) and number one doubles team Mason Haverstock (‘13)/Jack Paladin (‘14), (1-6, 3-6) and (3-6, 3-6) respectively, the Los Altos Wildcats just needed one more win to clinch the victory.

The remaining matches were taken to three sets after the Vikings and the Wildcats split sets. While the Vikings played strong throughout the first two sets, they had trouble closing out their third sets to secure the wins.

George He (‘14) lost in the third set 6-4, 2-6, 1-6. The number three doubles team Will Lichtenger (‘12)/Justin Wang (‘12) also lost in a close third set 6-7, 6-0, 4-6.

Although the Wildcats had already secured their victory, number two doubles Dar Shavit (‘12)/Aditya Mahadevan (‘14) added a second win to the Viking’s score.

Despite the Vikings’ loss, Hu has believes that his teammates have potential to pull out wins in future matches.

“Our singles players are solid and they’ve gotten more consistent and developed some big strokes,” Hu said.

Coach Andy Harader agrees with Hu that the team has improved greatly since last season.
“This team beat us 7-0 last year so it’s definitely more competitive right now,” Harader said.
Despite today’s loss, the Vikings, now 2-1, hope to be contenders in CCS.
“I think it’s going to be a good season for us. Our goal is to make CCS and to do better in our league – but there are no weak teams in our league,” Harader said.
