Brief: Paly wrestling defeats Fremont high school 53-13

The Palo Alto High School wrestling team blew out Fremont High School, 53-13 this Thurs. night at the Firebird’s gym.Although the Vikings were missing senior Ryan Oshima (‘12) due to an ongoing ACL injury, underclassmen wrestlers James Giaccia (‘15) and Jordan Gans (‘14) stepped up their level of play to add points to Paly’s scoreboard.
The Vikings started off the dual with two big wins by light weight wrestlers Giaccia and Jordan Smith (‘13), who wrestled in the 113 weight class, giving Paly  momentum.

Teammates commented on the successes. “A lot of our younger kids who normally have a hard time on varsity did really well,” co-captain Nick Ortiz (‘12) said.

Early on in the 134 weight class Ortiz pulled away with a win against his opponent who was ranked 8th in CCS.  Ortiz kept his opponent on the mat and got a cut with 30 seconds left.  His victory played a key role in getting the Vikings a lead.

The Vikings were pleased with their performances; the win contributed to their dual meet winning streak.

“Yesterday went really well, we took down Fremont, it was very tough competition but this year we seemed to really blow them out.  The coaches were very happy with our performance,” Erik Anderson (’13) said.

Coach David Duran agreed with Anderson. “Yesterday went well; everyone wrestled really well, from the [Junior Varsity]  kids all the way to our best wrestlers, everybody did what they are supposed to do,” Duran said. “The boys have put in a lot of time and have been doing a good job.”

After another league win under their belt the Vikings look to make an impact in their league as well as in tournaments.  If the Vikings defeat rival Los Gatos on Senior Night this Thursday they will place first in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic [SCVAL] league and go into the tournament the following Friday and Saturday with momentum.

Both the players and coaches are looking forward to a close match this Thursday against the Wild Cats.

“Its always big,” Ortiz said, “Ever since I’ve been at Paly, I don’t think we’ve ever beaten Los Gatos.”

Duran shares the same opinion about the upcoming meet.

“It’s a big night for us. If we win this dual on Thursday… we will be league champions,” Duran said.

The Los Gatos dual meet and senior night will be at home on Thurs. Feb. 2.
