Palo Alto volleyball faced the Los Altos Eagles Tuesday night at the annual Dig Pink game in support of breast cancer awareness. The Vikings lost in four sets.

Cassandra Fong (‘17) was satisfied with the team’s performance despite the end result.

“I think we played well, I think we could’ve played better,” Fong said. “Our servicing was alright, I think we could’ve caught more passes and been on our toes more. I think overall we fought hard against a tough team.”

The first set started off strong for the Vikings, who made it 7-2 early on. Los Altos then went on a scoring streak and eventually tied it at 8. The Eagles eventually gained and widened a lead and, despite a late effort by Paly, won the first set 25-19.

Although Los Altos got the first two points of the second set, Paly tied it up and then went on to gain a lead that they kept for the rest of the set. Paly brought it to 22-15 before the Eagles went on a 5-1 streak to make it 23-20. The set ended with a kill by the Vikings and an error by the Eagles, giving the set to Paly, 25-20.

Los Altos carried some momentum into the third set, leading until the Vikings went ahead 19-18 late in the set. Despite the score staying close for the rest of the set Los Altos went on a final 3-0 streak to win it.

The fourth set went back and forth with both teams having some scoring streaks and the score staying relatively even. Despite Los Altos gaining a 23-19 lead towards the end, Paly hung on and made it 24-23 Los Altos before losing the set and therefore the match when a Los Altos player tipped it over the net.

Chelsea Fan (‘18) thought her team fought hard at the end but believes the start had room for improvement.

“I think we played really well towards the end, but at the beginning we were kind of rattled and we missed a bunch of our serves,” Fan said. “In the future I think we should start off with a better start and less missed serves, and then just keep our momentum.”

Next up, the Vikings face the Homestead Mustangs away on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 6:45 p.m.
