Girls’ cross-country finishes sixth at CCS Championship meet

The Palo Alto High School girls’ cross-country team finished in sixth place in Division One at the Central Coast Section (CCS) Championship meet at the 2.95 mile Crystal Springs course on Saturday, Nov. 13.
The Lady Vikes finished with 178 points, behind Carlmont High School (58 points), Gunn High School (87 points), Homestead High School (115 points), Monta Vista High School (147 points) and San Benito High School (148 points).

“As a team, we did okay,” Katie Foug (‘15) said.

Gunn’s Sarah Robinson (‘14) finished first in the race with a time of 17:12. Paly’s top finishers were Foug, who finished eighth overall with a time of 18:58, and Chika Kasahara (‘13), who finished 10th overall with a time of 19:10.

The sixth place finish was not enough for the team to qualify for the State Championship meet, a fact that coach Paul Jones attributes more to the other teams than to the performance of the Paly team.

“We actually did not finish as high up the ladder this year as we did last year,” Jones said, “but it was because of the competition, which was stiffer this year than it was last year.”

Foug did manage to qualify for the State Championship meet as an individual with her eighth place finish, and says that she is looking forward to the experience.

“I know I’m not going to do outstanding, since I was the last one [in CCS] to make it in [to the State Championship Meet], but it will be a good experience for the future,” Foug said.

Besides Foug, who will run her final meet on Saturday Nov. 26, this was the final meet for the 2011 team. Both Foug and Jones expressed optimism at the team’s chances to improve next year.

“Our team stays pretty much the same, and our JV team is really strong right now… so I think we’ll be really strong for the next couple years,” Foug said.

Jones added a similar sentiment.

“We have a very good group coming back next year,” he said. “I think we could be in the mix to win it next year.”
