Girls’ track and field defeats Los Altos, 78-44

Paly girls’ track and field beat Los Altos Eagles, 78-44 Thursday at Los Altos High School. The day started off poorly for the Vikings, as the 4×100 meter relay was disqualified due to a failed hand off. However, the Los Altos relay team was also disqualified, so after the first event the score was deadlocked at 0.The Lady Vikes rebounded in the 1600 meter run, with Katy Foug (‘15) finishing in first with a time of 5:31.98 and Audrey DeBruine (‘14) taking third place with a time of 5:41.74.

The Vikes also held their own against the proficient hurdle squad of Los Altos, as Nora Carlson-Strom (‘13) and Mia Polansky (‘13) placed second and third, with times of 19.02 and 19.24, respectively, in the 100 meter hurdles.

In the 100 meter dash, Torie Nielsen (‘12) finished second after running it in 13.12  seconds, and Pippa Raffel (‘14) crossed the line in third place with a time of 13.30 seconds.  In the 400 meter, Lydia Guo (‘12) placed second with a time of 1:02.41.

After battling with Los Altos early in the meet, the Lady Vikes began to pull away as the meet wore on. In the 800 meter run, DeBruine placed first with a time of 2:35.96, Shaheen Essabhoy (‘13)  finished second with a time of 2:37.57, and Isabelle Kelsey (‘14) wrapped up the Paly victory with a time of 2:37.95.

In the next race, the Lady Vikes further widened their lead, sweeping the 300 meter hurdles. Foug finished first with a time of 51.90, Carlson-Strom placed second with a time of 54.24, and Polansky completed the sweep with a time of 55.37.

Stephanie Allen (‘13) finished first in the 200 meter with a time of 27.31, after she defeated the six other Los Altos runners. Later, the Vikings further pulled away, after Chika Kasahara (‘13) and Anne Hildebrand (‘12) ran times of 12:23.61 and 12:36.26 to finish first and third, respectively.  The team wrapped up their dominance in the running events, after the 4×400 meter team finished first with a time of 4:23.79.

In the field events, the Lady Vikes built their lead even more. In the high jump, Lindsay Black (‘12) jumped 4’8’’, Jade Schoenberger cleared (‘15) 4’6’’, and Danielle Palmer (‘14) made 4’2’’, as the Vikings swept yet another event.

In the shot put, Black broke a Palo Alto track record with her impressive throw of 36’1.5’’. The Vikings also scored another point in the throws after Palmer placed third with a throw of 82’3’’.

In the long jump, Raffel and Nielsen finished first and second, after they jumped 16’10” and 15’3.5”, respectively. The success continued in the triple jump, as Raffel and Nielsen finish second and third with jumps of 32’5’’ and 32’0’’, respectively.

The Vikings will race Milpitas High School next on Thurs. 29 on the Milpitas field.
