Boys baseball vs Gunn preview

The Palo Alto High School boys’ baseball team (15-3-1) looks to take on crosstown rival, Gunn High School (4-13) at 3 p.m Saturday on the Paly baseball field. In this non-league game, the Vikings hope to defeat the Gunn Titans in their first meeting this season.

With Palo Alto beating the Titans the past two years, the Vikings are confident in keeping their streak with another win.

“We can’t really worry about the team. We are just going out to play our brand of baseball,” Jake Varner (’18) said. “I do believe that our team is better than theirs based on our record, but we can’t get too sloppy.”

After a solid 10-1 win against Saratoga on Wednesday, they play them once more on Friday before facing Gunn. Even with a back-to back game. Varner believes they can still win.

“Our field definitely gives us an advantage and it is nice to be able to play two games at home,”Varner said. (On Saratoga) “We really hit off their pitching and I think that it’ll be a repeat of that, possibly even better.”

The Gunn Titans hope to bounce back from a shutout loss (3-0) against Santa Clara on Thursday. Despite the loss, sophomore Shiva Bucklin remains positive for the upcoming game.

Each year is a new team and a new game. I hear Paly has had a great season so far, and I know that each team is going to put their best players on the field and hope for the best. However, I honestly think it’ll go to whoever wants it more.” Bucklin said.
