The Palo Alto wrestling team placed ninth this past weekend at the 32nd annual Mid Cal Classic in Gilroy.

Both Nicolas Ortiz (‘12) and Kalen Gans (‘12) reached the finals and finished in second place in their respective weight classes.

The Vikings as a whole were not able to meet the high standards they set for themselves.

“We had some guys who we expected to do better, but I think overall it was a good effort by everyone,” Gans said.

However, the team performed better than in past years.

“We got eight people to the second day, which is the best we’ve ever gotten,” Gans said.

The team will be working on making changes for upcoming competitions.

“We need to work on not getting stuck under… [it makes] the difference of the match,” Ortiz said.

In addition, Gans and Ortiz will be looking to drop weight classes for the upcoming duals.

The Vikings will take on Fremont high school in a dual meet at Fremont this Thurs.
