The Palo Alto High School girls’ varsity tennis (3-3) lost to Lynbrook (3-4) under gray skies and scattered drizzle.

Sammy Solomon (’13) won the No. 3 singles match (6-4, 6-2) and was the only singles player to win.

“I just felt really relaxed on the court and the last time I played this girl I won, but it was really close,” Solomon said. “I got in a similar situation where I was down in the first set, but I kept fighting and came back to win the set, and that gave me confidence going into the second set.”

No. 1 Aashli Budhiraja (’14) lost her match 2-6, 2-6, No. 2 Felicia Wang (’14) lost hers 0-6, 2-6 and No. 4 Hollie Kool (’14) lost hers 3-6, 1-6.

Head coach Andy Harader thought that some of the girls were just having a bad day.

“I think it was an off-day today for some of the girls,” he said. “But, the No. 2 and 3 doubles were really good.”

No. 2 doubles partners Tiffany Nguyen (’13) and Julianne Le (’14) won their match 6-0, 6-3 and were the first off the courts.

“I feel really good,” Nguyen said. “I think we really played well as partners today and it’s boosting our confidence. The rain started distracting us in the second set but we pulled through and ended the game.”

However, both Le and Nguyen contend that they have room for improvement.

“I think we could have communicated better,” Le said. “Next time we’ll also eliminate our unforced errors and that’s how we’ll improve.”

No. 1 doubles partners Katy Abbott (’13) and Caroline Nore (’14) lost their match, but played well, according to Harader.

“I think Katy and Caroline played a remarkable match,” he said. “Even though they lost they played really well, probably the best they have this season.”

The team’s closeness is perhaps its best quality so far into the season, Le said. Despite losses, “we cheer each other on, and it really helps,” she added.

The Lady Vikes will step onto the courts again to play Monta Vista on Thursday. They hope to perform well against one of the top contenders in the League.
