The Lady Vikes triumphed over the Monta Vista Toreros 3-0 on Thursday. Thursday night’s game was their second league win.

The Vikings started the game out strong, winning the first six points of the first set. However, Monta Vista was able to come back and take the 25-24 lead later on in the set. The Vikings regained the lead with a tip by Hayley Poore (`15) and a hit by Anna Dukovic (`15). The team won the set 27-25 with a tip by Dukovic.

The second set was back and forth between the two teams, and ended with Paly winning 25-23 on a controversial call by the referee. Thursday night’s libero Kabria Dame (`15) said that the call led to angry yelling by the Monta Vista parents, and that the team had to figure out how to ignore it.

“[When the parents were yelling at us], we brought our team in,” Dame said. “We said, ‘Focus on our side. Do our job and what we have to do to win.’”

Paly won the third set 25-15 on a block by Dukovic and Gabby Bains (`16).

Head Coach Daniele Desiderio was very excited about the team’s success, and the way that they powered through the frustration of a losing record.

“It was great, we came from four [lost] matches… so it was kind of difficult in the beginning,” Desiderio said. “I enjoyed the way that the team fought [during] the match.”

Dame agreed with her coach about the excitement of the win, and cited the team’s communication as key to the win.

“It felt really good [to win],” Dame said. “We were talking the whole time and we were really disciplined on defense.”

Desiderio was also proud of his team’s defensive discipline, but thought that the team could work on their offensive skills for the next match.

“I think we did a very good job on blocking and defense, but we could do a better job on the hitting side,” Desiderio said.

The Vikings play their next match on Tuesday against Homestead High School at Homestead at 6:45 PM.
