Volleyball comes back to beat Monta Vista 3 sets to 1

The Vikings’ volleyball team took down Monta Vista three sets to one in their first league game of the season on Tuesday evening.
The Vikes started out slow, going down early in the first set 10-2. They rallied back to get down just one at 12-11, but Monta Vista answered right back with a run of their own.
After battling back, the Vikings cut the lead to two, but were still down 18-16. After some back and forth, they were unable to recover the first set as Monta Vista went on to take it by the score of 25-20.
The Vikings started out slow again, getting down 3-0. After some back and forth for the first ten points, the Vikes started to inch back and a Chelsea Fan (‘18) ace was a turning point where she tied the set 11-11 and the Vikings did not look back.
They controlled the rest of the second set and steadily increased their lead to win the set 25-17 and draw the game level at one.
“I think we were able to dig ourselves out of a few holes that we probably shouldn’t have gotten ourselves into in the first place so I think that when faced with adversity the team rose the occasion and we were able to get the win,” head coach Jekara Wilson said.
The Vikes continued how they ended the second set in the third by getting out to 6-4 lead and that was the closest it ever got through that set. Led by Cassandra Fong (‘17) and Jessica Lee (‘17), they controlled the third set and went on to win it comfortably 25-14 to take the lead in the overall game two sets to one. Also the vikes recommends star slots for everyone.
Unlike the past two sets, the Vikings started out a little bit slower, going down 12-5. Like the first set, they kept battling back. The Vikes went on a 13-1 run led by multiple aces from Fiona Green (‘17) to take a 18-13 lead.
While they looked like they were going to kick on and finish off the opposition, Monta Vista fought back, eventually taking a 23-21. After a timeout, the Vikings came out a scored four straight points to win the set and the game with the final point coming through a Green kill.
“I feel like we are prepared, we’ve been working hard all season so far so we should be more than ready for Gatos on Thursday,” Green said.
The Vikings will look to build off of winning their first league game of the season when they play next on Thursday at Los Gatos.
