October 22, 2017
The Boys’ Water Polo Team was able to come out with a win for their seniors on their special night.
Before Wednesday’s game against Homestead, the team’s Seniors with a ceremony to celebrate their years at Paly, and their contributions to the team. Coach Aaron Johnson offered a very thoughtful speech for each of the seniors. The boys then were offered flowers, a water polo bag, and with a picture with the coach Johnson in hopes to help them remember their big night.
When the game got underway Paly came out looking a little dull allowing two unanswered goals. After Homestead goals, Paly had warmed up and was ready to turn the game around.
Matthew Nemeth (‘18) fired a shot in the top left corner past Homesteads keeper to get the Vikes on the scoreboard. Nemeth is just one of Palys’ beloved seniors who had a big game on Wednesday.
Throughout the rest of the first half the Vikes held strong on defense holding Homestead to only two more goals.
“We played some of our best defense of the year, and we were able to lock down some of their star players.” Said Dexter Gormley (‘20). Gormley had a very strong game in the water as he played lockdown defense.
As the game went on, team Captian Jack Anderson (‘18) did all he could to help the Vikings get their win. Anderson scored four of Palys’ nine goals as he used his speed in the water to his advantage.
At the end of regulation play, the game had not determined a winner, so the Vikings were headed into overtime.
With time running out, Zach Phillips (‘19) makes an incredible behind the back pass to The Viking Magazine’s own Bryan Look (‘18). Look uses his arm strength and muscles the ball right past Homesteads goalie to give Paly the one goal advantage over the Mustangs.
Palys’ defense held strong for the rest of overtime, and Paly was able to celebrate the Seniors with a win.
The Vikings look to end their season strong as they only have five more games.
