The girls tennis team is looking to translate their late season chemistry into more victories after their loss to rival school Los Gatos with a final score of 2-5.

With this loss, the girls varsity team moves to 3-5 in league matches, with four league competitors still in there path before they compete in CCS along with the rest of the De Anza League. Although their record is not perfect, the team has high hopes for their remaining games thanks to their progression as a team throughout the season. One of the teams standout players, Maddi Paige (‘21), is enthusiastic about the team’s recent performance despite the final score.

“As a team I think we are playing very well. Most of our losses are super close” Paige said (‘21).

Considering the fact that the majority of the girls varsity team is comprised of young players, the team has done significantly well introducing their young athletes to the high level of competition that the De Anza League entails. In their second year in the De Anza, the team led by head Coach Andy Harader are on the brink of surpassing many of the league’s most challenging teams, falling behind by narrow losses and unfortunate defeats in crucial tiebreaks.

“We have lost too many tiebreaks but our dubs are pretty good because we have a deep team.” Paige said (‘21).

One thing that is sure to benefit the team in any future decisive matches is the late season comraderie established among the young athletes.

“We have gotten better since the beginning of the season because players feel more comfortable and confident playing with each other and there is a better team dynamic.” Paige said (‘21).

The team hopes to bring this confidence and teamwork into their upcoming matches against Saratoga, Monte Vista, Los Altos, Gunn and Cupertino. With five matches left in their season, there is still a chance to achieve a winning league record.
