Girls Golf 2019 Season Preview
August 26, 2019
Coming off of a successful 2018 campaign, the girls golf team is ready to reclaim their spot at first again. Although the team lost captain Jasmine Choi (‘19), senior captains Katherine Sung (‘20) and Priya Bakshi (‘20) are ready to lead the team.
“The season is looking really good for us this year,” Sung said. “We only lost two seniors last year and have a strong team going into this season.”
The team is looking very strong despite a number of players leaving. Along with Sung and Bakshi, Sung’s younger siblings, Lauren Sung (‘22) and Sydney Sung (‘22), are on their second year with the team. Juniors Madison Pineda (‘21) and Marina Mata (‘21) also add a few years of experience, and Bridget O’Keefe (‘22) is coming off of her first year on the team. Adding on to these key returners, the team also adds four freshmen to the roster.
Because of their strong core returning for another year, Sung is optimistic of their chances of winning.
“We are looking forward to continuing our undefeated streak for the third year in a row and winning the SCVAL League Championship for the third year in a row and CCS Championship for the second year in a row,” Sung said.
Of course, anything short of a championship would be disappointing to the girls, but they have gelled together as a team to make sure that goal happens. Although they do not get much attention compared to other Paly sports, their hard work and continuous grind resembles other sports at Paly.
“All the girls have been working hard over the summer to fine-tune our games so that we can absolutely dominate this season,” Sung said.
The team hopes that success in the past years can translate into a successful campaign this season. With such high expectations, the team needs to make sure to play smart and give high effort in all of their matches. The team understands this and is motivated to give their all this season.
“Our goal is to make it to states, which we have come very close to multiple times. However, I feel like with the practice regimen and our team drive, we can definitely get there this year,” Sung said.
The girls golf has a scrimmage against Harker and Valley Christian on Wednesday, August 28. Be sure to support your Vikes!
