The Palo Alto High School girls’ water polo team (2-1) defeated Monta Vista High School, 16-6, on Tuesday at the Paly pool.
Thirty seconds into the game, Paly’s Haley Conner (’11) scored the first goal of the game, putting the Lady Vikes into their lasting lead. Within the first minute and a half, Anna Glaves (’11) scored two more goals followed by a goal by Katie Maser (’11) putting Paly up 4-0 with a strong lead against Monta Vista.
The Lady Vikes took this opportunity to work on plays they had been practicing.
“[We had] really good counter attacks, we were good pressing defense and then setting up our goals off our defense and that was one of the things we worked on a lot and it looked great and we got a lot of goals in transitions,” Paly head coach Cory Olcott said.
The second half saw more strong play from the Lady Vikes offense as they racked up 16 total goals, bringing the score to 16-6 at the final whistle.
“Although it was a team that we kind of ran over, we did a lot of the stuff that we came out planning to do and I think offensively we looked pretty strong, and defense was obviously strong,” Maser said.
The Lady Vikes take on the Homestead Mustangs tomorrow at 6:45 p.m. at home.
