Vikings’ baseball blown out 10-1 by Campolindo
April 20, 2014
After a long seven innings, the Vikings baseball team lost to the Camoplindo High School Cougars Saturday 10-1 on Saturday afternoon. Paly had 6 hits in comparison to Campolindo’s 14.
The top of the first inning started with strong pitching by Justin Hull (‘16) who tallied a strike out and drew two fly balls to Bowen Gerould (’14) and Phil Lewis (’15) to keep the score at 0-0.
First at bat for the Vikings, Gerould was walked, however, Lewis then hit a line out to first, resulting in a double play. Batting third, Jack Cleasby (‘14) was hit by the first pitch; the play was called back however as the umpire stated that Cleasby was leaning in. Cleasby followed the call by hitting a homerun to put the first point on the scoreboard. Laurence Han (‘16) was then walked and advanced on a balk to second base. A ground out to shortstop was hit by Owen Plambeck (‘16) to end the inning 1-0.
Campolindo’s first batter began the inning by hitting a double and then stealing third. The second at bat then hit a single to allow for the first batter to run home and bring the score to a tie. Paly followed up by creating a double play and Hull finished the top off with another strikeout.
The bottom of the second included Jack Andrews (‘15) hitting a line out, Anthony Lim (‘14) hitting a ground out to third base and no on base action for the Vikings.
The third inning started off with Plambeck catching a pop out. Campolindo then followed up with hitting a double and then stealing a third. A sacrifice bunt resulted in Hull getting the out at first but brought in a runner to bring the score to 2-1 Campolindo. The next Cougar hit a single and then stole both second and third base. Hull then walked the next batter, and Campolindo found the scoreboard again with a three-run homerun. A ground out ended Campolindo’s at bat leaving the score at 5-1 going in to the bottom of the third.
The bottom of the third was strong defensively for Campolindo as both Daniel Tachna-fram (‘14) and Gerould hit fly outs to left field. Lewis followed up with a ground out to second base as Campolindo held on to their lead.
The fourth inning started with a pitching switch for the Vikings as Issac Kasevich (‘15) relieved Hull. Kasevich provided strong pitching as Lim caught a line out, Plambeck caught a fly out and Kasevich fielded a ground out to bring the inning to the bottom.
At the bottom of the fourth Cleasby hit a single to center field to start off the Vikings offensively, however the Cougar’s defensive strength proved to tough as the Vikings could not get on base after Cleasby.
The fifth inning mirrored the fourth as the Cougars increased their lead by scoring once more to bring the score to 6-1. The Vikings did not score during the fifth inning.
The sixth inning was scoreless for both teams.
Another pitching switch occurred at the top of the 7th inning as Corey Bicknell (‘15) replaced Kasevich. The inning ended with four runs by Campolindo including a two-run homerun.
Despite the loss, Cleasby discussed his looking forward to focussing on the upcoming league games.
“We played a tough opponent, they swung the bat pretty well and they’re a pretty good team,” Cleasby said. “I’m upset that we lost, but we have just got to focus on our league games and league title that [are] coming up.”
The Vikings will next take on the Los Gatos Wildcats on Wednesday, Apr. 23 at 4 p.m. at Los Gatos High School.
