Paly boys’ lacrosse barely grabbed the win in their game against Los Gatos with a final score of 9-8 after double overtime.

Matt Seligson (‘16) and Cole Tierney (‘16) started off the first quarter strong with 2 goals each to make the score 4-2 at the end of the quarter. Seligson scored another goal just a few minutes into the second quarter. He proved to be a key player for the Paly offense. Midfielder Owen Staiger (‘15) shot and missed the goal. The ball was recovered by Los Gatos and their player scored to make the score 5-4. Staiger had another attempted shot but missed. The score remains 5-4 when halftime is called.

Tierney and Seligson scored yet again to bring the score up to 7-4 in the third quarter. Los Gatos went on a 5 minute scoring streak to tie the score at 7-7 with 5:18 left in the game. Austin Amon (‘16)  scored a goal for the Vikings with 1:08 left in the game to lead the Vikings 8-7 Los Gatos shot and scored to tie the score at 8-8 with just 41 seconds left in the game.

The game now moved into sudden death overtime. Staiger shot the ball and just missed the cage. The ball was recovered by Los Gatos who then shot on our goal. The shot missed the cage but Los Gatos regained possession. Quintin Valenti (‘16) saved a shot with 30 seconds left in overtime. The game now moved into double overtime.

Tierney shot and scored for the Vikings to end the game after double overtime with a final score of 8-9. The players stormed the field to celebrate their much-anticipated win over the Cats.

“They were undefeated and first in the league so this win is a big deal and we should be considered best in the league now or at least in the top two,” Tierney says.

This game was mentally and emotionally taxing, but in the end the Vikings are just happy to have been able to pull out the win in such an intense game.

“It was a great game, battle throughout, they came back and scored three straight in the fourth quarter to take it to overtime and I’m pretty sure everyone on the field was exhausted and it was just a dogfight and Cole came through big with the goal at the end and it’s a great win,” Zach Levitan (‘15) says.

The Vikings will go on to play their next game against Leland on Wednesday, April 29th at home.
