Paly boys’ varsity beat Mountain View High School today at the home track for the first dual meet of the season.
The last encounter with the Spartans proved disappointing; the Vikings lost the 2011 dual meet.
“This is our toughest meet of the year,” Lucas Brooks (‘12) said.
The Vikings started off with a loss, falling to the Spartans in the 4×100 meter relay, which consisted of sprinters Matt Tolbert (‘13), Morris Gates-Mouton (‘12), Jayshawn Gates-Mouton (‘13), and Jonathan Alee (‘13).
Following the initial loss, distance runners Nikolai Solgaard (‘12) and Ben Hawthorne (‘13) placed first and third respectively in the 1600 meter race. Solgaard finished with a time of 4:45:00 minutes, Hawthorne with a time of 4:53:00 minutes. The distance team also took second place in the 800 meter run, where Solgaard came in with a time of 1:59:00 minutes.
The boys’ continued to gain momentum throughout the course of the meet. Standout performances included a personal record set by Tremaine Kirkman (‘12) in the 100 meter, who completed the race in 10.9 seconds. Kirkman raced on the 4×100 meter relay team that competed at the State Championship during the 2011 season.
To complete the meet, the boys swept the 4×400 meter relay team, bringing Paly the victory.
Overall, the team was pleased with their performances.
“It was great win against an excellent team,” EJ Floreal (‘13) said. “We were really able to use all of our strengths to beat a team that has been killing us for the past couple years.”
The Vikings will compete in the first away meet of the season next Thurs. 22 at Los Altos high school.
