Paly lost to Gunn in their dual meet Thursday night by a close 12 points. The Vikings had to forfeit two match-ups because they were lacking wrestlers to wrestle Gunn’s 220 and 285 pound wrestlers; this cost them the 12 points they needed in order to tie Gunn.
“Just another rivalry week against Gunn.” James Giaccia (’15) said. “Paly came out on bottom this time which is disappointing. If a couple people performed a little bit better, including myself, we could have got the win but we’ll have to take it in stride.”
Proceeding the two forfeits, Paly had the lead 28-16 after a pin by former Gunn wrestler Tak Nishi (16’). Kevin Schumacher (15’) also had a pin to earn the Vikings six points in addition to the points earned by Giaccia and Josh Deckelman (14’).
The next three Paly wrestlers got pinned giving the Titans an unbeatable lead of 46-28 with only one match-up remaining. An upcoming freshman prospect, Seth Goyal (17’), finished the meet strong by earning the Vikings four last points.
“This is the best we’ve wrestled in a dual meet this year,” Coach David Duran said. “We’ve got a lot of first year wrestlers out there and they did a good job.”
About seven wrestlers from the varsity squad will compete in the Mid Cal tournament at Gilroy High School tomorrow and Saturday.
“We have some kids that could place [in the tournament] and if you place there that’s a good sign because that’s a tough tournament.” Coach Duran said.
