Girls’ basketball triumphs over Wilcox 64-24
February 7, 2015
On Friday night, girls’ basketball defeated Los Altos with a final score of 64-24. After tonight’s win, the Vikings are 9-0 in the De Anza League and lead the league with an overall record of 19-2.
Alexis Harris (‘16) scored the first basket of the night for the Lady Vikes, beginning a favorable trend of pounding the ball inside the paint. The Eagles immediately answered with a three pointer, their only basket of the first quarter. Harris quickly grabbed back the lead to the Vikings, a lead that would never be relinquished. The Lady Vikes dictated the tempo during the first quarter with Harris and Courtney Lovely (’16) scoring ten and six points respectively. Another couple of baskets scored by Carly Leong (’18) gave the Vikings a 25-3 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Los Altos’ offense turned on the gas, led by Meg Enthoven (’17), who scored eight points in the quarter. The Vikings began to push the ball up and down the floor in transition, with Lovely and Leong leading the offense with four and three points, respectively, in the quarter. At halftime, the Vikings maintained a 17 point lead, 37-20.
The second half was similar to the first quarter, with the Vikings’ defense and offense overpowering the struggling Eagles team. Harris, Lovely and Leong finished their outstanding nights with a total of 20, 16 and 11 points, respectively. The Vikings easily controlled the game during the last four minutes, and the game ended on a final score of 64-24.
“I’m very happy with how we executed our game plan tonight,” head coach Scott Peters said. “We did what we wanted to do and dictated the game.”
The Lady Vikes will face cross town rival Gunn High School at home tomorrow at 6:15 p.m.
“It’s a rivalry game,” Peters said. “If we don’t get up for Gunn, there is something wrong. We will be up.”
