The boys basketball team went 10-2 in league wins in the 21-22 season last year, and are hoping to take the win in their first league game against Gunn on December 16.

Senior captain Jackson Martin explains how this game will set the foundation for the upcoming season.

“In terms of the Gunn game, they beat us last year so in this first game we really wanna show them that we’re a solid team and take the win,” said Martin.

Along with showing their improvement from last year, the boys have also had a big shift in players. They lost eight seniors at the end of the season last year, and are building a new team of a lot of underclassmen.

“We’re building a new team dynamic because we’re a really young team,” said Martin.

The boys anticipate a difficult season, but are ready to give it their all. Success comes from putting in hours and training.

“We have three hour practices, which is getting us in shape for the season,” said junior Tyler Frick. “We’ve also been scrimmaging some pretty good teams, which has helped get us used to high level competition.”

Being a part of the SCVAL league is competitive, with strong opponents such the well-known viking rivals, Los Gatos.

The team has worked hard preparing for the season and went through extensive tryouts. New players have joined the varsity team including sophomore Jorell Clark and they have a bright future ahead of them.

“I think that we have a lot of new juniors and sophomores who are going to step up into big roles this year, and I’m excited to lead them and see their growth and impact on the team,” senior captain Mert Yanar said.

The coach, Jeff LaMere, has been guiding the team for over 4 years. Through his coaching, the team has been able to flourish and find their individual strengths throughout the season with his guidance.

With league games and various tournaments starting in December, the Vikings have an exciting few months coming.
