Boys’ and girls’ track and field competed at the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League (SCVAL) qualifier meet this Friday at Santa Clara High School. Boys’ placed first with a 57 point lead over 13 other teams; girls’ placed fourth with 41 points.
The boys’ began with a win in the 4×100 meter relay. The team of Jayshawn Gates-Mouton (‘13), Morris Gates-Mouton (‘12), Tremaine Kirkman (‘12), and EJ Floreal (‘13) finished with a time of 42.42 seconds.
For the next few events the Vikings were unable to place in the top six spots, but the boys’ turned on the engines with the 100 meter dash. Floreal, Kirkman, Matt Tolbert (‘13), and Jayshawn Gates-Mouton swept the event, finishing with times of 10.61 seconds, 10.96 seconds,11.26 seconds, and 11.26 seconds, respectively. Floreal broke the standing meet record time.
The 800 meter race proved to be a continuation of the rising momentum. Nikolai Solgaard (‘12) placed first with a personal record and meet record, finishing with a time of 1:56.31 minutes.
In the first successful hurdle race of the day, Michael Johnson (‘13) took second place in the 300 meter hurdle event, placing in a time of 41.51 seconds.
The last sprint race was another point-earner for the Vikings. Floreal, Jonathan Alee (‘12), Kirkman, and Jayshawn Gates-Mouton placed first,second, fourth, and fifth in the 200 meter dash. The boys’ earned a total of 24 points in that event.
The Vikings left the track with a final victory in the 4×400 meter relay. The team took first place with a four second lead over Wilcox high school.
The field events added a cushion to the overall win for the Vikings. Victor Du (‘13) and Grant Shorin (‘13) earned a combined total of eight points in the high jump, placing third and fifth. Shorin and Du placed once again in the long jump; Shorin took second place, Du third.
The girls’ held their own against the league, placing fourth overall. The first victory of the day was taken in the 4×100 meter relay. Torie Nielsen (‘12), Lydia Guo (‘12), Pippa Raffel (‘13), and Anna Dukovic (‘15) finished in a time of 50.05 seconds.
In the 1600 meter race, Katie Foug (‘15) placed fourth in a time of 5:18.86, racing in a personal record and earning four points for the Vikings.
The girls’ continued to finish top six for the 400 meter and 100 meter races. Guo took fourth place in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:01.69 minutes, and Nielsen came in fifth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.76 seconds.
The girls’ did not place again until the 4×400 meter relay, where the team came in fourth with a time of 4:10.34 minutes.
Those who finished in the top six positions will continue to the Central Coast Section (CCS) Semifinals meet next Sat. 19 at Gilroy High School.
