The Paly boys’ lacrosse team took on the Carlmont High School Scotts at home last night in the first round of the SCVAL playoffs. The boys triumphed, winning 18-5.
Paly started off strong, Andrew Frick (‘14) won the first face off of the game and quickly brought it down to the offensive end for the Vikings. Kris Hoglund (‘12) was the first to score, ripping a shot that flew right past the goalie a minute into the game. Jordan gans (‘14) followed up with another goal for the Vikings a minute later.
The Paly defense had a stand out game, led by Gabe Landa (‘12) and Walker Mees (‘13). They hovered around the Carlmont offense and gave them minimal chances to get close to goal. Though Carlmont slipped through the defense and scored, Skyler Anderson (‘13) responded with a fast shot from in front of the cage and put the Vikings up 3-1 five minutes into the game. Carlmont gained possession and attempted multiple times to get to the goal, only getting one shot off which was saved by the Vikings goalie Tyler Valenti (‘13). Tully Mcallister quick sticked a shot into the goal, the Vikings led 4-2 at the end of the first quarter.
Paly controlled the ball for most of the game, and Andrew Frick (‘14) won possession in over half the face offs he took. Paly scored quickly in the second quarter, off an assist from Johnny Glazier (‘13) to Tully Mcallister (‘14) who was perfectly positioned in front of the goal. Towards the end of the second half, the ball rarely left Paly’s offensive end, as goals were scored by Jordan Gans (‘14), Will Hare (‘14), Johnny Glazier (‘13), and Skyler Anderson (‘13).
“We played really well as a team today,” Kris Hoglund (‘12) said. “We didn’t really play down to their level.”
Paly ended the first half with a strong 12-3 lead over Carlmont.
Carlmont came into the second half of the game hoping that they could bring up their score. The Vikings immidetly shut them down and gained possession of the ball, which ended in a goal scored by Andrew Frick (‘14). Carlmont tried to break through the Paly defense and score, but Valenti (‘13) blocked all the shots thrown at him. Jordan (‘14) and Kalen (‘12) Gans scored right after each other, giving the Vikings a hefty lead over the Scotts. Paly began to let loose, throwing out wild checks which resulted in a two minute non releasable penalty for a blow to the head from Kalen Gans (‘12).
The Vikings gained composure and had two quick goals from Hoglund (‘12) and Glazier (‘13). Paly allowed no more goals throughout the remainder of the game, and ended with a goal scored by Christo Proceviat (‘14).
“We didn’t give them a chance, so that we could come out with a win,” Hoglund (‘12) said.
The vikings move on to the second round of SCVAL playoffs, and will face Menlo-Atherton High School away on Wednesday.
