The girls’ water polo team demolished Wilcox this evening by a score of 15-3. This game marked the first step in their quest for a Santa Clara Valley Athletic League title.
The Vikings jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. Emma Wolfe (’14) put the first points on the board for the Vikings with an over the head goal with 3:24 left in the first quarter. Katie Francis (’16) and Tess Van Hulsen (’15) each also contributed a goal in the first quarter to give the Vikings a 3-0 lead going into the second.
Paly played near flawless water polo for the next seven minutes. Abby Bromberg (’13) protected the goal valiantly with several saves off Wilcox shots. The well tuned Viking offense kicked it into high gear scoring five more unanswered goals. The run was highlighted by another goal by Van Hulsen and a blocked five meter penalty shot by Bromberg. With 1:12 left in the half the Lady Vikes led 8-0. Wilcox was finally able to squeek one past Bromberg before the end of the hald. Wolfe answered the Wilcox resurgance by scoring another goal with :13 left in the second quarter. At half time the Vikings led 9-1.
Paly once again opened up the scoring in the second half when Van Hulsen scored her third of five goals on the night with 4:24 left in the third quarter. Wilcox was determined to not go quietly into the night as they immediately answered with another goal. With the score standing at 10-2 Abbey Kinnaman (’13)Â ended the Chargers comeback hopes when she scored on a fast break goal of a pass from Van Hulsen. The third ended with the score at 11-2.
The Lady Vikes continued their dominating play in the fourth quarter. Van Hulsen and Wolfe each scored two more goals to put the Vikes up 13-2. Wilcox was able to score one more goal but it was quickly answered by goals from Caroline Moley (’14) and Van Hulsen.
The Vikings will take to the pool in their second round game tomorrow at 4:15 at Gunn High School.
