“Last season was difficult, but the team really rallied through to end the season well to make sure we were able to stay in the De Anza division, which means we can continue to compete against the best teams.” senior Zachary Crystal said.
The team has a good mix of fresh new faces, but also experienced players who have played at the varsity level before.
“I think we have a stronger squad this year,” junior Hadrien De Martel said. “Last season we had less players so we struggled more when key players got injured, but I think this year if that happens we’ll be able to power through.”
While this may mean that some don’t receive as much playing time, junior Cole Baker believes that a larger roster is beneficial for the team.
“I think that the amount of players creates a healthy amount of competition for spots but also provides depth for rotation.” Baker said.
Under coach Luiz Lodino, the team is set up in a new 3-4-3 system, one that has brought them early success, remaining undefeated in their first three games. This three defender system gives a lot more freedom to the attacking players. Lodino has also heavily focused on improving the team’s chemistry, organizing multiple team dinners and events.
“Coach Luiz has been amazing, he really cares about mentality and team chemistry,” Crystal said. “Even though it’s his first season here, he’s embedded that into the culture of the team. From the very beginning, with practices at 7:00 in the morning, and a demand for intensity, he has set the standard for the team. I can tell he really cares about this program and is willing to fight for us so we can have a successful season.”
Given that it’s still very early in the season, the team knows that they will have to work hard to continue their winning ways. De Martel believes that the team will still need to grow and develop in order to achieve future success.
“Our chemistry will definitely improve, and with our new players, more experience, and new coach, I know that we will have a great chance at performing well this year.” De Martel said.
