In a gripping game on March 16, 2024, that kept spectators on the edge of their seats, the Paly varsity baseball team narrowly fell short against Sequoia, with a final score of 8-7 in their non-league battle. Despite an initial surge that saw them carve out a substantial lead, the Paly team couldn’t maintain their momentum throughout the entirety of the game, ultimately surrendering the win to their opponents in the later innings.

The ballgame kicked off with immense excitement for the Vikings, as they showcased their skills and determination on the diamond. Paly’s offense came out swinging, generating early runs and putting the pressure on the Sequoia defense. However, baseball’s unpredictable nature soon came into play, with momentum shifting as the game progressed.

“We were definitely working super hard and giving it all in the first five innings,” senior Jake Papp said. “But for some reason we started to slow down after that.”

Despite facing adversity, the Paly boys displayed resilience and tenacity, fighting to maintain their advantage. But, Sequoia, refusing to back down, also fought hard for their comeback, chipping away at the deficit with each inning.

The game reached its climax in the 7th inning, tension rose even higher and in a grand finale, Sequoia managed to score 5 runs and clinch the victory.

Senior standout Charlie Bates reflected on the game, acknowledging the team’s strong start while emphasizing the unpredictable nature of baseball. “We started out strong and got ourselves a pretty big lead, but you never know how the game can go,” Bates said. “Hopefully next time we will keep up the energy we had at the beginning and secure the win.”

Although disappointed by the outcome, the Paly boys remain determined to learn from their performance and use it as motivation moving forward. With their sights set on future matchups, they are committed to channeling the energy and intensity they displayed at the outset of the game into securing victories down the line.

The Vikings now possess a 2-5 record and one thing remains certain: the Paly varsity baseball team will continue to strive for excellence and fight in the pursuit of success on the diamond.

Hey y'all! My name is Katie Yen and this is my third and final year on Viking Magazine! This year I am business manager of the publication and am super excited for this year. A story that has always stayed with me was my story on Athlete Burnout. It was super fun and interesting to hear from Paly athletes about this topic. Fun fact: I am really good at pickle ball!
