Wrestling Season Preview 2022
November 28, 2022
Wrestling looks to continue its success from last season into this season, continuing their efforts as they have practiced non stop since the end of last season.
Returning senior captains Hailey Oshita, Josh Wilde, and Phillip Santiago look to have a strong senior year for themselves, hopefully making their long term goal of being able to continue their season and compete against the best of the best.
“Our expectations this year is to compete hard in everything we do beginning in practices and have it translate to success in competitions,” Oshita said. “My personal goal is to qualify and obtain a medal at the state tournament next spring.”
Other returning members of the team including EJ Rudolph-Harris (‘24) and Tasman Johnson (‘25) look to top their performance of last year and have a better showing in CCS playoffs. They were ultimately defeated within the first or second round, never making it out of the losers bracket in their previous playoffs. They also hope to build upon their existing skills to become even stronger next year.
Wrestling competes in some tough tournaments including the Lou Bronzan for the boys and the Kusumoto Klassic for the girls. The first tournament they compete in as a team is in the Webber Lawson, located at Fremont High School. Last year, they finished sixth with 95 points. They went 17-4 overall at the tournament.
They also have plenty of newcomers this year, including seniors Ian Johnson and Jacob Kasanin, and junior Grant Jauregui. They look forward to making an impact on the team and learning more about the sport.
“I had always wanted to learn how to wrestle but I never had the time,” Johnson said. “This year I decided to try it and it has been very fun so far. The relationships that you build with your teammates is amazing as everyone is really nice and friendly. Wrestling is definitely one of the most physically demanding sports I’ve done and the workouts are very hard so it’s a good challenge. ”
Wrestling kicks off their season on December 3rd, first competing in the Lady Royal Tournament located at Overfelt High School.
