Fremont jumped out to an early lead over Paly, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning on three hits and three walks off of Vikings’ starter Fabiana Teofan (‘19).

After that, the Firebirds kept the 4-0 lead for two innings until the Vikings scratched across a run scored by Jesse Kim (‘16).

The Vikings brought in Dhesya Salsabila Swezey (‘18) to pitch at the beginning of the second inning, Swezey was dominating. She retired six of the eight batters she faced in the second and third inning.

Fremont extended its lead to 6-1 in the top of the fifth scoring two runs off of Salsabila Swezey on three more hits for the Firebirds.

Just as the game seemed out of reach for the Vikings, a clutch fifth inning rally scored five runs to tie the game. The Vikings quickly seized momentum and added four more runs in the very next inning. Key hits by Samantha McBride (‘18), Maggie Renteria (‘17), and Sophie Frick (‘18) catalyzed the rallies.

After the impressive comeback, Paly closed out the game quietly, cruising to a 10-6 victory.

“I think that we were relaxed and confident,” Elizabeth Schnaubelt (‘18) said after the game. “That helped us stay cool in the game. [Dhesya] did well. We can always count on her, and we try to back her up in the field as best we can.”

“After the first inning I think we definitely stepped it up and didn’t give up throughout the game,” Frick said. “We knew that if we focused and stayed relaxed then we could get back in the game.”

Paly plays again Thursday and will look to continue their winning ways at Gunn at 4 o’clock.
