Girls Swimming Season Recap
May 17, 2023
The girl’s swimming season ended in success as they placed third in CCS and shined at States. Three of the four members at States were sophomores although everyone excelled during their races and the girls ended in 11th place.
The pre-season started out with consistent dedication and regular practices. The morning and afternoon practices added up to nine a week. Although they had lost many seniors they were able to set it up and keep the team going.
“The season was really good. We had a lot of underclassmen but they brought a good source of energy to the team and overall were so cheerful and ready to work,” swimmer Grace Gormely said. “I also think there was no one on the team who was slacking at any point and I really feel like everyone put in their all for the swim season.”
The team worked well together despite many obstacles. They triumphed against rival teams like Los Altos and Homestead.
“I really loved how much we accomplished this year. I feel like everyone really stepped up and we ended up being undefeated and winning leagues,” swimmer Alden Backstrand said. “I know I swam a lot outside of swim season to get better and I think my teammates were good about putting in the same amount of work outside of the pool as well.”
As their season came to a close, the team ended with high hopes for the next years to come. With so many promising underclassmen, the swim team is sure to beat the current records next year.
“I can’t believe the season ended so fast. I am truly going to miss each and every one of my teammates. I also wanted to thank my coach for truly being so supportive throughout the entire season and always being there for us all,” swimmer Brooke Hudacek said.
In addition to Paly girls swimming, the diving team also had a very successful season.
“I feel like diving was so much fun this year and we really won a lot and succeeded so much,” diver Alena Lotterer said. “I loved getting to bond with everyone and make more friends as well as help the newer divers get acquainted with the sport.”
The team went to CCS with Alena Lotterer, Charlie Miller, and Mateo Diaz. All three shined during their dives. Later, Gunnar Grubbs went to states and he and Alena Lotterer won leagues.
Overall the girl’s swim and diving team was a huge success as both teams accomplished so much. They all attribute their success to the coaches and the continued hard work of their teammates. They are sure to break even more records next swim season!
