It has certainly been an interesting season for the San Francisco 49ers. As of week 11, the 49ers sit at a respectable 7-4, 3rd in the NFC West, and hold the last wild card spot in the stacked NFC.
The key for the 49ers’ success has always been staying healthy, as in the seasons where they were able to stay mostly healthy, they have made it to the NFC championship and the Super Bowl.Â
Unfortunately, it has certainly been another injury-riddled season for the 49ers. Superstar Linebacker Fred Warner is done for the year after a dislocated ankle, along with Superstar Defensive End Nick Bosa, who tore his ACL. Promising rookie Mykeil Williams is also out for the year, who was really turning up his production a few weeks before his season-ending ACL tear. New 49ers Defensive End Bryce Huff was acquired from the Philadelphia Eagles this offseason, after he signed a three-year, 51.1 million dollar deal with the Eagles in the 2024 offseason, but the 49ers are only paying a small fraction of that big contract. Huff has been very productive after reuniting with his former Head Coach from the New York Jets, Robert Saleh, who is currently the Defensive Coordinator for the 49ers. However, he suffered a hamstring injury in late October against the Atlanta Falcons and has yet to pick back up where he left off before his injury, as in his two games since returning, he has just one total tackle.
In light of these huge injuries, it has allowed promising young players to develop. For example, Linebacker Dee Winters has stepped in for Fred Warner and has shown flashes with 77 total tackles. Rookie CB Upton Stout has also been very impressive in his rookie campaign, recording 51 tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble so far this year.
Offensively, it hasn’t been smooth sailing either. Starting QB Brock Purdy has been fighting a turf toe injury this season that has kept him out for 8 games so far this year. However, backup QB Mac Jones has looked extremely promising in his 8-game stretch, with a notable win against the Los Angeles Rams in week 5.Â
Superstar Tight End George Kittle got injured during the week one matchup vs. the Seattle Seahawks and landed on IR for the next 5 games. He has looked promising since his return, however, posting six catches for 67 yards and two touchdowns in their latest win vs. the Arizona Cardinals.
Superstar running back Christian McCaffery has been the only consistent glimmer of hope for this offense thus far, as he is 13th in the NFL in rushing yards while 9th in the NFL in receiving yards. His usage has been a little concerning however, as he is on pace for over 400 touches, which hasn’t been done since Derrick Henry in 2020, which also does not look good considering he is statistically having the most inefficient season of his career, only averaging 3.7 yards per carry, with his longest rush being just 20 yards, which raises the question, is age catching up to the All-Pro back?
In the wide receiver room, it has been very grim. Brandon Aiyuk has yet to return from his ACL and MCL tear he suffered last season, but is on track to return at some point in the near future. Jauan Jennings has been battling through numerous broken ribs and ankle sprains, and has yet to be very productive so far. 2024 first-round pick Ricky Pearsall was looking very promising the first few weeks of the season before he suffered a PCL sprain, which kept him out 6 games. He looks to still be getting up to speed, as he posted 1 catch for no yards in the win vs. Arizona on Sunday.
The 49ers made a somewhat surprising trade in August for Washington Commanders Running back Brian Robinson Jr.; however, it did make some sense considering McCaffery had suffered injuries the past few seasons. What makes this trade confusing is that McCaffery is on pace for 400 touches, and Robinson Jr. hasn’t gotten much of an opportunity in the offense. Another part of this that didn’t make much sense is the trade of Jordan Mason, whom the 49ers dealt to the Vikings in the offseason for a couple of day three picks. It would have made much more sense to just keep Mason on the roster instead of going out and getting Robinson Jr.
Superstar tackle Trent Williams is having the worst season of his career, and it appears that father time has finally caught up to him. Despite this, he is still most clearly their best offensive lineman. The unit as a whole has been solid, to say the least.Â
Going back to the offseason, the 49ers elected to let notable free agents Talanoa Hufanga, Dre Greenlaw, Charvarius Ward, and Aaron Banks walk to other teams. Ward, Banks, and Greenlaw have been battling injuries again this year, making it look like the smart decision thus far to move off of these expensive contracts. However, Hufanga is thriving with the Denver Broncos, and a huge part of why they are ranked the number one defense.Â
Looking ahead, the 49ers take on the Carolina Panthers this Monday night, in what should be a very important game for the playoff picture, as the Panthers have surprised this season, bouncing back from a 5-12 record to a 6-5 record currently, already surpassing their total wins the year prior.
Their most important upcoming matchup will be against the Seattle Seahawks, and it is certainly a must-win game if they have any hope of winning the division and catching up to the Rams and Seahawks.
