Starting outside hitter Maddie Kuppe (’12) hits cross-court shot against Los Altos defenders Natalie Dwulet (’13) and Meghan Cyron (’12). The Lady Vikes defeated the Eagles in three games.
The Paly (7-0-0, 20-3-0) volleyball team continued their undefeated league season by defeating Los Altos High School (5-3-0, 21-7-0) in three games. Last time the Lady Vikes played the Eagles they also won in three games, but they felt their energy level was much higher this time around.
“[The energy] was better than last time,” outside hitter Maddie Kuppe (’12) said. “Last time we played we had really bad energy, so the games were a lot closer.”
In the first set the Lady Vikes picked it up quickly and gained momentum with an11-point scoring streak. Los Altos used up their time-outs fast, trying to get momentum going, but couldn’t seem to do so. Paly finished the set 25-15. The points rallied back and forth for a bit in the beginning of the second set, but the Lady Vikes got their momentum back when Jackie Koenig (‘12) had a huge block. Kuppe secured the win for the Vikes with a kill, ending the set at 25-12.
“We came in confident,” setter Kimmy Whitson said. “I think we had really good practices this week and they’re a really good defensive team so we were practicing for that.”

After finishing their first two sets on a strong note, the Lady Vikes began to trail behind in the start of the third set. Once Paly was behind by six points, coach Dave Winn called a time-out to get their heads back in the game.

“In the third set  [Los Altos] started playing great defense and we started making a lot of hitting errors,” Winn said.

Whatever Coach Winn said to the girls worked because the Vikes came back out there and gave it their all, quickly winning the set 25-17 and securing their win for the match 3-0.

“We had a little less energy last time,” Coach Winn said. “I think this time we were more focused in the moment and I’m happy that Los Altos really stepped up their defense because we had to work harder for our points, but we did a good job after the first set minimizing errors.”

The Paly Vikings take on the Monta Vista Matadors next Tuesday at 6:45 p.m. at Monta Vista High School.
