Paly Boys Swim and Dive had an excellent season, closing out with a CCS victory and placing 4th at states. Additionally, diver Gunnar Grubbs won states in diving.
The swim team had an amazing regular season as well, winning each of their dual meets in the regular season, including victories against Homestead, Los Altos, Saratoga, Lynbrook and closing out the season with a senior night victory against Gunn at home.
The team’s only defeat came during a combined meet against St. Francis, Menlo Atherton and Leland, but was unable to put a damper on an otherwise extremely successful season.
The team, led by captains Nico Ogawa, Roan Haney, Blake Wang, and Nolan Lemon, were able to achieve as much as they did in part because of their ability to support one another throughout the entire season.
“Even when we were struggling, we came together with big victories,” Blake Wang (‘25) said. “Just like any team, we had our ups and downs. What was specific about us was our ability to stay together and keep working throughout any circumstance, regardless of what may have been happening externally at that time.”
On the other hand, the diving team was able to secure the state championship through a victorious performance from senior Gunnar Grubbs. Gunnar was actually able to break the state record for points during the final meet.
“I was super shocked when I broke the record,” Grubbs said. “I had messed up one of my dives early on.”
Next year, the team hopes to build on an amazing season, hopefully pushing for state victories in both diving and swimming. Rising senior Andrew Wu, who was an important member of the team this year, is excited for the team to continue their rise next year.
“We did great this year, and I was so excited to be a part of the team,” Wu said. “Even though we may lose some important seniors this year, we will be back next year even better than before.”
