Girls’ soccer trumps Wilcox, 9-0

Girls’ varsity soccer dominated Wilcox at home, on Wednesday, winning 9-0. Katie Foug (’15) set the tone for the game, scoring the first goal within minutes of the start whistle.

The Lady Vikes would go on to score three more goals to gain a 4-0 lead before half time, steadily pulling ahead from the Chargers. An aggressive offense along with clean passes kept the ball on Wilcox’s side almost the whole half and created many scoring opportunities for the Vikings.

In the second half, the Lady Vikes came out even stronger. Sunny Lyu (’14) and Megan Tall (’14) each scored two goals with Julia Kwasnick (’14) cinching the final goal with a penalty kick.

“The second half was much better than the first half. We were connecting more passes,” Jacey Pederson (’16) said.

After moving down divisions to play in the El Camino League this year, the Vikings have found more success, with a 9-0-1 league record.

“This game was good. It wasn’t that difficult for us,” Katherine Maniscalco (’13) said.

Coach Kurt Devlin, echoes Maniscalco’s sentiments.

“The girls have a lot of confidence now. We have good talent and good ability and you know the girls have some confidence with their play going through the division,” Devlin said.

In addition to being placed in new league, Maniscalco attributes the Vikings’ success to the team’s positive dynamic.

“I feel like I’m a part of the team, which is good. The seniors and upperclassmen have been like welcoming. We definitely have good chemistry, we have good friendships,” Pederson said.

In today’s game, the Lady Vikes were able to connect with each other well on the field, capitalizing on offensive opportunities.

“[The game] felt really good, in particular Megan and I had a good connection, we were able to play off each other and score and just assist each other. It was really nice,” Lyu (’14) said.

Looking forward to CCS, the girls are excited for some tough competition.

Devlin looks to CCS with high hopes, “Hopefully [we’ll] have a good run into CCS. If we get the right type of draw, we’ll do pretty well, I’m hoping. I’m optimistic for them, that’s for sure,” Devlin said.

The Lady Vikes will face Milpitas away this Friday at 7 pm.
